H.E. Prof. Arthur Peter Mutharika Swears-in as 7th President of the Republic of Malawi
In a historic return to leadership, Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika, the presidential candidate of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), was officially sworn in on Saturday, 4 October, as the 7th President of the Republic of Malawi, following his decisive victory over incumbent President Lazarus Chakwera of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP).
The inauguration ceremony, held at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre, drew a large and diverse crowd of government officials, party supporters, civil society representatives, regional delegations, and international guests, including the Presidents of Zimbabwe and Mozambique.
The event marked not only the peaceful transfer of power but also a renewed moment of national hope for stability, economic recovery, and inclusive governance.
His Excellency President Mutharika secured more than 56 % of the valid votes in the presidential election held on 16 September 2025, decisively defeating President Chakwera, who garnered approximately 33 %.
President Chakwera, in a televised address, conceded defeat shortly before the official results were gazetted, emphasizing his respect for the constitution and urging Malawians to support a peaceful transition.
In his inaugural address, President Mutharika acknowledged the considerable challenges that lie ahead, declaring that his administration inherits “a country in economic crisis — high borrowing, empty coffers, and failing institutions.”
He appealed to Malawians for patience, unity, and collaboration, promising “hard work, tough and painful decisions” rather than empty promises. He further pledged zero tolerance for corruption and a renewed drive for fiscal discipline, accountability, and institutional reforms.
On the foreign front, he made direct appeals to investors and international partners, and announced plans to dispatch a delegation to the United States to renegotiate aid and development commitments.
As President Mutharika assumes office, expectations are high across Malawi and in the international community.
The Embassy of Malawi expresses its unwavering support for President Mutharika’s administration in these endeavors and pledges to represent the interests of the Republic with renewed energy, integrity, and diplomacy.
We call upon all Malawians, at home and abroad, to work hand in hand with the new government to achieve the collective vision of a safer, more prosperous, and united Malawi.
